Someone told me once
"Promises made by just being polite can be broken."
Why do people make empty promises?
Is it similar to social site seems to be concerned and sympathetic comments?
When someone posts a picture of their broken leg in cast, hundreds of people will comment with sad face emojis, promises of praying for speedy recovery, and sympathetic replies. Do they really mean it, will they really include the person in their prayers, or they might think, who cares! Karma is a bitch, ain't it?
But they post their concerned comments because that is the polite thing to do.
Authors seem to be getting a lot of empty promises.
The past 8 years since I published my first book hundreds of friends, family, coworkers and strangers commented on my book release posts, "OMG, your new book! I'm buying it right now!" or "This story sounds amazing! I'm so getting this book!" and "Is it on Kindle? I'm buying it now!"
Then I'm waiting... and waiting... and checking my sales reports, and not a single sale :( Not even an eBook sale that cost only 99 cents.)
And then those who I know personally, "Oh, goodie! Can I have a signed copy?"
"Of course"! I reply happily, and I bring the book with me the next day. "It's $10," I say.
Here comes the reply, "Oh, I thought..." (meaning: Do you want me to pay for it? I thought you'd give it to me for free)
Then the polite excuses, "Oh, it's $10? I don't really read fantasy." or "I really want to support you, but usually I get children's books for my kids at yard-sales or at Salvation Army for a few bucks."
Later, people who stumble upon my books on selling sites or click on my websites are buying and enjoying my books, but those I know and show support by making promises, maybe a handful fulfill their promise.
People mean well, they want to be polite and supportive, so they make empty promises.
So I thought, I could save people from feeling bad because they know the minute they promise to buy my books, they know they will not buy it, but they will feel guilty about making that polite, empty promise.
So here is the deal:

If you'd like to support me and you like my books, then buy a book.
But, if you don't like what I write, or you find my books too expensive, click on this link and instead of making an empty promise to buy my books, show your support with a small donation of your choice: paypal.me/goldenboxbooks/
The truth is that I make less than a cent out of every dollar I have spent publishing my books, so every little bit helps me keep going and helps me to invest in publishing my next book.
Thank you for your support!
